Joy Charbonneau honored with The Muriel S. Wright Outstanding Office Professional Award
Hampton Association of Educational Office Professionals (HAEOP) presented Joy Charbonneau with the Muriel S. Wright Office Professional of the Year award. Charbonneau has worked with Hampton City Schools for three years. Her current position is an administration secretary to Executive Director of School Leadership Dr. Anita Owens. Charbonneau is also a board member of HAEOP, helps the 21st Century/Out of School Time coordinator, and is part of the Calendar Team.
Dr. Owens nominated Charbonneau based on three principles she feels Charbonneau exhibits everyday, which include: be there, choosing your attitude, and make their day. Dr. Owens, said, “Personally, I believe her parents hit the mark when they named her Joy, as it simply means a feeling of great pleasure and happiness, all of which she exudes daily.”
Coworkers often say she brings a positive, infectious attitude to the workplace and is often going above and beyond to make sure students and parents are at ease. Charbonneau realizes that parent’s frustrations/passion comes from the love of their children and wanting what is best for them. Charbonneau reassures them that it is also HCS's goal, and together they can develop a plan to reach these goals. Charbonneau feels that is the most rewarding part of the job.
Charbonneau, said, “It was an honor just to be nominated. I have been fortunate that since I have been with HCS, I have had outstanding bosses, Dr. Pat Leary, Dr. Raymond Haynes and Dr. Anita Owens. Working with them has been a gift in itself, winning the Muriel Wright Award is the icing on the cake!”
Muriel S. Wright worked in HCS for over 30 years, in many capacities, including personnel and the superintendent’s office. She was one of the early members of HAEOP. When Wright retired from HCS she established the Muriel S. Wright Award, to be presented annually to the outstanding office professional employee. Prior to her death in the fall of 1996, Wright requested that the award continue on her behalf. She left adequate funds designated for the $200 award.

The majority of pages in our site are available in HTML format that can be deciphered by screen readers. Some documents are in Portable Document Format (PDF), which require Adobe Acrobat Reader to view.
Also, many popular browsers contain built-in accessibility tools, and there are other plug-ins that make websites more accessible.
The HCS website is designed and monitored by HCS Webmaster Vickie Carper, who serves as the gatekeeper for website content and accessibility. The Webmaster is under the direction of the Executive Director of Public Relations and Marketing, supervised by the Director of Graphics.

Our continuing goal is for the HCS website to be accessible to individuals with disabilities in compliance with the requirements of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and that statute's implementing regulations at 34 C.F.R. Part 104, and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and that statute's implementing regulations at 28 C.F.R. Part 35.

Prior to posting new website content, the HCS Webmaster determines if the proposed content meets the criteria of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Periodically the HCS Webmaster checks the website with a recognized website checker such as 508 Checker and WAVE. If the audit identifies issues of concern or content errors that impede accessibility to any user, the concerns/errors are evaluated and remedied within a six-week period.
