Hampton High School students create model of Olympus Mons through NASA program
The Virginia Space Grant Consortium selected Hampton High School to create a model of Olympus Mons to support a national NASA program. Olympus Mons, a volcano on Mars, stands over twice the height of Mount Everest and is currently the largest known volcano in the solar system.
Nineteen students at Hampton High worked on this interdisciplinary project with the support of their science, construction, technology, and Art teachers. They had to research the topography of Mars and the volcano, create a computer simulation, as well as design, construct and decorate the model.
Teams from community colleges around the Unites States will construct Mars Rovers using Mindstorms and EV3 programming. The teams will compete with their Rovers on a challenging course that simulates the topography and environment on Mars. The Hampton High School Olympus Mons model will be a focal point on the course. This was a tremendous cross-curricular project for the students and an honor for Hampton High.
In appreciation for their hard work, students were awarded certificates from the Virginia Space Grant Consortium.
