Phoebus High School students participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition
Hundreds of students, parents, and fans came out to see Phoebus High School students compete in a battle of the bots during the FIRST Robotics Competition on March 18 and 19.
PHS students competed against 30 teams. PHS designed and built their robot named Phantom Mentalists #2028. Donald Williams, a career technical education teacher at PHS, coached the students. The PHS team was picked by the second seed alliance to be their partner in the playoffs. They won in the quarterfinals but lost the tiebreaker third match in the semifinals.
This weekend they go to Glen Allen to compete again. If they earn enough points, they will qualify for the district championship that will be held at the VCU Siegel Center April 5-8.
This local competition attracted teams and fans from across the state. The robotics competition teaches students about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Students must research and design a robot for the competition, test its prowess and perform various maneuvers with it.
According to their website, FIRST Robotics Competition is recognized as the premier high school engineering challenge. Teams of students, working closely with teachers and volunteer mentors, have six weeks to conceptualize, design, build, program, modify and test a robot to participate in a competition that changes each year.
