Hampton City Schools employee, Kate Wolfe Maxlow, publishes book
Kate Wolfe Maxlow, professional learning coordinator for Hampton City Schools, has published her first book, 20 Formative Assessment Strategies that Work: A Guide Across Content and Grade Levels. The book was co-written with Dr. Karen Sanzo of Darden College of Education – Old Dominion University. Sanzo is also a former employee of HCS.
According to Maxlow, the book is a practical guide to implementing engaging formative assessment activities in any classroom for any grade level. Each assessment comes with easily implementable directions, classroom management and differentiation tips, and a how-to guide for using assessment results to inform instruction.
The book is a follow-up to Formative Assessment Leadership: Identify, Plan, Apply, Assess, Refine by Sanzo, Dr. Steven Myran, and Dr. John Caggiano. Caggiano is the deputy superintendent for instruction, curriculum, and assessment for HCS.
“I've enjoyed collaborating with Dr. Sanzo, who has a wealth of knowledge around effectively leveraging formative assessment using a systematic approach,” said Maxlow. “One of my passions is combining what the research says works with easily implementable strategies for every classroom, and working with Dr. Sanzo on this book allowed us to do just that.”
Maxlow graduated with a Master of Education degree from The College of William and Mary. She has served as an educator since 2004. Before coming to Hampton in 2014, she worked as a classroom teacher, an instructional coach, and an independent consultant on teacher evaluation and effective teaching for school districts across the country.
The book will be released in December. It is currently available via preorder on Amazon.
