Spratley students produce NASA eClips film
Lisa Ann Wilson, a digital studio teacher at Spratley Gifted Center, was selected to serve on the NASA eClips Spotlite Production Group in conjunction with the National Institute of Aerospace’s Center for Integrative STEM Education. Wilson’s seventh and eighth grade students have been tasked with a design challenge. In this authentic project, students will create a video for a NASA audience that confronts and corrects a science misconception.
NASA eClips are short, relevant educational video segments. These videos inspire and engage students, helping them see real world connections.
Students, working in collaborative teams, have selected the following topics to debunk as science misconceptions: plants die in the winter, the atmosphere is mostly oxygen, and plants are nonliving.
The target audience is elementary students. In order to better reach their audience, the students are spending time with third and fourth grade students during their science classes. The older students listen to the science instruction for the younger students, talk with them, and help them during activities.
The students are developing a storyboard and script and will be shooting and editing their videos in the coming months. The students must write and produce a 90-120 second film that presents the misconception and then teaches the audience the true scientific facts (i.e., plants are indeed living things: they are composed of cells, they make their own food, and grow). Their film must also include an alternate explanation for the science concept and do so through a conversation between characters.
Student-produced videos that pass the NASA review process will be featured on the NASA eClips website.
