PHS culinary students excel in recent competitions
Congratulations to students in the Phoebus High School culinary program. They recently excelled in the 2018 Prostart and NASA HUNCH competitions.
The Hot Foods team placed second in the 18th Annual Prostart Invitational in Leesburg, VA. Each of the students on the team won scholarships to top culinary institutes ranging from $750 to $3,000 per year. They competed with other culinary programs from throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Team members include: Anaya Cooper, Alfredo Garcia, Jabari Johnson, Iyana Miller, and Jesse Schoell.
The Virginia ProStart Student Invitational is composed of two distinct competitions - management and culinary - that showcase the most important skills needed on both sides of the restaurant and foodservice industry, front-of-the-house and behind the scenes in the kitchen.
Team members include: Mya Brooks, Anaya Cooper, Daysi Hale, Amarianna Thomas, and Ymirah Wilson
The PHS culinary program is one of ten programs from throughout the nation that has advanced to the next level of the NASA Culinary Challenge and will be competing in Houston, TX. Their dish is chili garlic shrimp with gouda grits.
The NASA HUNCH Culinary Challenge is a competition that is open to culinary programs to develop food items for the astronauts aboard the International Space Station. Each year a theme is provided to the schools and students create new dishes taking into account food processing procedure and nutritional requirements so that their items meet the standards of the NASA Johnson Space Center Food Lab.
“With the growing culinary program, we are excited to bring in a wider range of students and show how research into space isn’t limited to only STEM fields,” said Chef Travis Walker, culinary instructor at Phoebus.
The dishes will be judged by Food Lab personnel, industry professionals, the International Space Station (ISS) program office, and astronauts for quality, taste, their work on the research paper, and presentation video. The winning entrée will be processed by the Johnson Space Center Food Lab and sent up to the station for the astronauts to enjoy.
The culinary program at PHS won this competition in 2015 with their spicy shrimp entree.
