Cigna and Blessing in a Backpack partner with Machen Elementary
Thanks to Cigna’s 2018-2019 sponsorship with the Blessings in a Backpack program, two hundred Machen Elementary students will receive a backpack full of satisfying and nutritious food each Friday until the end of the year.
The kick-off event to celebrate Cigna’s sponsorship and “National Blessings in a Backpack Day” was held at Machen Elementary on September 27, 2018. Cigna employees and Hampton University students packed four weekends worth of food – or 800 bags – for Machen students. The event featured an assembly for the students with several guest speakers. The Hampton University drum line was also in attendance to help with the celebration.
Adrienne Woods, Machen family engagement specialist, said, “Blessings in a Backpack Food program provides students with a nutritious bag full of food that they will receive every weekend until the end of the school year. We are so excited and appreciative of this phenomenal healthy food resource for our students. The children were all smiles as they received their bags. We would like to thank Blessings in a Backpack and Cigna for this amazing opportunity.”
Blessings in a Backpack mobilizes communities, individuals, and resources to provide food on the weekends for elementary school children across America who might otherwise go hungry.
According to Blessing in a Backpack website, there are more than 13.1 million children in this country who are at risk of hunger. The consequences of hunger are much more than a growling stomach. Poor nutrition can result in a weaker immune system, increased hospitalization, lower IQ, shorter attention spans, and lower academic achievement. Children are fed during the school week by federal government programs, but Blessings in a Backpack wants to make sure they are getting nutritional meals over the weekend, too.
