Hampton Environmental Literacy Program participates in Write as Rain campaign
The Hampton Environmental Literacy Program (H.E.L.P.) partnered with the Hampton Clean City Commission and askHRGreen on the Write as Rain Campaign. H.E.L.P. teachers and their
students from all Hampton middle schools, Bridgeport Academy, and most high schools used an eco-friendly rain-resistant spray to adhere motivational “green” messages around their school as reminders of everyday actions that can be taken to help the environment. The messages can
only be seen when wet. When it rains, the wet pavement darkens around the message, making
it visible. The messages addressed several environmental concerns.
“I Won’t Add Wipes to Our Pipes!”
“Purge the Plastic – Choose Tap Water”
“I Won’t Stand For Litter!”
“I Pledge Only Rain Down the Drain”
Student participants pledged to follow these eco-friendly actions at home and school.
“We really wanted to focus on students, schools and the places they go with this year’s batch of messages,” said Katie Cullipher, askHRgreen.org team leader. “But grownups can have fun with it too. The goal of this campaign is for people to think twice about the impact certain actions can have on our environment.”
The next time it rains in Hampton, see if you can find the magically appearing environmentally-
themed messages at Andrews PreK-8 School, Bethel High School, Bridgeport Academy, Eaton Fundamental Middle School, Hampton High School, Jones Magnet Middle School, Kecoughtan High School, Lindsay Middle School, Phenix PreK-8 School, Spratley Gifted Center, Syms Middle School, or Tarrant Middle School.
In addition, there is an incentive for people who follow askHRgreen.org on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter and share a picture of themselves with a “Write as Rain” hidden message. Those who post an image before Oct. 12, using the #askHRgreen hashtag, will be entered into a drawing for fun prizes, such as gift certificates to restaurants and passes to fun local attractions like Dave and Busters and the Virginia Zoo. Winners will be selected at random, and prizes will be awarded weekly beginning Sept. 17. Can’t find a message? That’s okay, according to Cullipher.
“It doesn’t have to be a rainy day for you to participate in the fun. Anyone can post a
photo or video showing us what they do to help protect the environment with #askHRgreen to
be entered to win,” she said.
