Spratley Gifted Center students place at Model Water Tower Challenge
Five teams of students from Spratley Gifted Center participated in the Tidewater Model Water Tower Competition on Saturday, October 20. The event is sponsored by the American Water Works Association. The teams from Spratley received five awards in the competition.
The challenge is to build a structurally efficient model water tower that holds water and can be filled and drained quickly, while also being aesthetically pleasing. Middle school students from public, private, or home schools can compete in teams of up to four students each.
The objective of the competition is to make participants aware of the importance of reliable drinking water and the rewarding opportunities available in the water profession. The competition does this by having students develop an idea into a functioning water tower; just like water professionals do in the real world. Prizes are awarded to the top three scoring teams, with a top prize of a $75 Visa gift card for each member of the first place team, $50 gift card for each member of the second place team, and $25 gift card for each member of the third place team.
“The Model Water Tower Competition gives students the opportunity to collaborate in real-world applications within constraints,” said Deanna McNeil, Spratley co-sponsor.
“Our teams embraced the creative aspect of the challenge and came up with unique designs using recycled materials.”

Team Tidal Waves, comprised of Adalis Ramiez Acosta, Amirah Ward, and Sofia Leyva, received the Most Creative award and earned first place.
Team The Good LEGO Logo earned third place and the Most Structurally Efficient award. This teams consists of Jordan Townsend, Charles Parker, and Sarah Pearson.
The following teams from Spratley: Thirst Quenchers, comprised of Ellery LaPointe, Madison Newton, and Becca Felkner, and The Teddy Bears, comprised of Lucy Brady, Evelyn Murphy, and Isabelle Wilson, both received honorable mentions in the competition.
The Masters Builders team consisting of Loagan Claw, Phillip Mason, Lee Logan, and Tahj Kornegay, also participated in the competition.
