Family engagement specialists Amy Killian and Diamond Torres to present at the 21st Century Spring Institute

Family engagement specialists Amy Killian of Tyler Elementary School and Diamond Torres of Lindsay Middle School will present at the 21st Century Spring Institute on March 10 and 11, 2021.

Torres’ presentation is titled Math Munchies: Quick, Bite-Sized Math Events for Family Engagement. This interactive session will highlight math family events that combine learning and family fun activities for all students including English Language Learners. Participants will gain strategies on how to create events (in-person and virtual) that promote math skills as well as engage both families and community partners.

Killian’s presentation is titled Linking Families to Literacy: Strategies and best practices on how to connect families to their child's literacy learning. Attendees will learn how to design and host engaging and meaningful family literacy programs, both in-person and virtually. The session will also cover how to involve community partners in the work, as well as ensure learning opportunities are equitable for English Language Learners and their families.

Prior to joining Hampton City Schools, Killian led the marketing department of a small, education-focused credit union. She earned a Bachelor of Science with a major in business/marketing from Old Dominion University. A child of two educators, it is no surprise that Killian found a way to weave her creativity and marketing passions into a career in the education field.

Torres is passionate about growing schools, families, and communities stronger together. Through the pandemic, she continues to connect and engage families through in-person and virtual learning opportunities. She started her career as a college prep advisor working with the University Texas for six years with the National College Advising Corps and the Texas GEAR UP grant.

Congratulations and good luck on your presentation!
