Melanie Parker of Lindsay Middle School is named VAASL York Region Librarian of the Year

Melanie Parker, librarian at Lindsay Middle School, was named the Virginia Association of School Librarians (VAASL) York Region Librarian of the Year.

Parker began teaching with Hampton City Schools at Bethel High School in 1997. After eight years teaching English, she became a part of the first library cohort partnership with Longwood University and a librarian at Lindsay Middle School. She was a part of the International Baccalaureate school offering the Middle Years Program, underwent IB training, and was introduced to many educators from around the nation and the world. Parker left Lindsay in 2012 to become the librarian for an international IB school in Qatar, a small country in the Middle East. At Qatar Academy Al Khor, she was instrumental in the expansion of the library program to include three separate libraries in the PK-12 school. After six years overseas, she returned to Hampton and HCS. She said that when the librarian position at Lindsay opened, she jumped at the chance to return to Lindsay. She has been a member of the VAASL since becoming a librarian.

The AASL Regional Librarian of the Year Award recognizes outstanding Virginia school librarians. Each of the regional winners will have their applications evaluated by a panel that will choose the final statewide Librarian of the Year this fall.

In her nomination letter for Parker, Chevese Thomas, principal at Lindsay said, “In addition to a full makeover in our school library, Mrs. Parker has lit a spark in our media center as well as in our literacy program at Lindsay Middle School. I cannot think of a more deserving honor that will recognize and highlight a true professional that has gone above and beyond her school community and has made a positive impact at Lindsay Middle School.”

Congratulations to Melanie Parker and good luck as your application moves toward the State Librarian of the Year.
