Three HCS staff members selected to serve on Social Emotional Learning Instructional Workgroup

Kendra Boykin-Miles, reading specialist at Bassette Elementary School; Tiffany Hardy, director of student services; and Tirzah Sarro, science teacher, instructional leader, and climate/culture coach at Phoebus High School, have been selected to be a part of a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Instructional Workgroup through the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).

Social Emotional Learning is the process through which individuals develop skills, attitudes, knowledge, and beliefs necessary for self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, relationships, and responsible decision-making. Hampton City Schools has been on the journey for several years to implement and embed Social Emotional Learning into the daily work with students. The VDOE has recently selected K-12 teachers, school counselors, and other instructional personnel from around the state to be part of a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Instructional Workgroup. The purpose of the workgroup is to review and provide revisions to the draft standards for SEL; craft a vertical articulation of competencies that is developmentally appropriate; and develop a curriculum framework to support the implementation of SEL standards in local school divisions.

These team members were required to apply in a competitive process and were selected for their instructional/curriculum knowledge and for their dedication to integrating social emotional learning into their teaching practice. This representation reflects the on-going commitment in Hampton City Schools to Social Emotional Learning.
